The Secret to Understanding What Makes You Do That Thang You Do

Image

Interpreting your experience is the way to circumvent feeling tossed around by life taking whatever comes along and just dealing with it. In creating successful life strategies one must be aware of one’s dreams and the role they play in the experience of everyday life. By integrating the dream with the business of life personal power is restored while the realization of dreams and goals flows into the practical experience of living increasing happiness and joy.

The premise for living big is to believe in our dreams and trust that we have the power as creators to bring those dreams down to earth and accomplish great things. We have a nature that lends it’s self to discovery through curiosity to know our purpose in life. As we act upon our dreams we discover clues to the answers of this question. The experiences we gain through our discovery shape the way we function in our lives. The nature of discovery is to uncover the unknown and causes us to experience fear or excitement, the basis for all ancillary feelings, which triggers thought and action.

Our society is filled with so much information from so many sources that unless we are actively thinking about the true risk of any given situation our mind filters that information through our fight or flight mind where our actions are based upon survival. Living big is living beyond survival through thoughtful action to reach goals successfully. Understanding the communication between ourselves and our world i the shortest distance to knowing how to modify our reality to align to our dreams, wishes, wants and desires. The four modes of functioning model is a powerful tool for interpreting and analyzing the feedback received throughout our experience.  Conscious use of the model increases understanding, personal power, and successful results.  The four modes of functioning are sensing, feeling, thinking and acting. Each mode of function operates in a constructive or destructive way.

To create SMASHing Life Strategies for 2012, use the Four Modes of Functioning model to interpret your experience.  Set a timer for three minutes, respond quickly, let answers sit for a few days and repeat, notice what changed, add images to your writing. Remember this is about the process not the product. Using the conscious and subconscious parts of your mind allows you to gain insight and enhance your experience. Allow each mind to express its self on the page without expectation to maximize your experience.

Observe through Sensing. Take a look at the nine areas of balance and for each one, ask;

  1. What am I experiencing?
  2. What do I Sense? See? Feel? Think/Hear? Taste? Smell?
  3. Have I experienced this or something similar to this before?

Thinking Mode. Interpret the data.

  1. What do I believe about this experience?
  2. What do I judge about this experience?
  3. What do I believe about myself?
  4. What do I judge about myself?
  5. What do I hold back from doing because I believe this?
  6. Is what I believe true for all humankind?
  7. What would happen if I did not believe this about myself?
  8. What would be different if I didn’t believed this to be true?

Feeling Mode. Analyzing Cause of Action.

  1. How does it feel to believe this?
  2. What is the strongest emotion that I connect to this experience?
  3. What would I feel if this thought never existed? Have I ever felt that way in the past? If not, what do I imagine that feeling to feel like?
  4. Who would I be without_____?
  5. What does my response to this even tell me about my true nature, or purpose?

Acting Mode. Applying What You Have Learned.

  1. What have I learned?
  2. How will I apply what I have learned?
  3. What am I currently doing in this area?
  4. What is working and not working?
  5. What would be ideal? Have I experienced these results in the past? If not, what do I imagine ideal would be like?
  6. What would I get out of living this ideal? What would it do for me?
  7. What would it take to get a step closer to this ideal from where I am now?
  8. What resources do I have to help me reach the ideal?

Great Minds Have Purpose

Washington Irving expressed, "Great minds have purposes; others have wishes." Because we do not live in a vacuum, when we remove negative behaviors, positive ones must replace them or negative behaviors will return to fill the void. Cultivating healthy thought habits is crucial in creating balanced LYFE strategies, clarity, intention and manifesting our desires.

There are many ways to train the mind to run healthy thought patterns that will result in our attracting circumstances that match our desires such as, meditation, visualization, affirmation, vision boards, etc. All of these are effective and when use in conjunction with each other has the potential to be very powerful.

It is important to note that affirmations founded upon congruent beliefs are the most powerful ones. It is not impossible to convince yourself that you deserve a Porche but to manifest a Porche you must believe with all your soul that you deserve it, that it is for your highest good and purpose, that one has already been created for you and that it is on its way into your concrete world. To create this belief and write it into your physiology you must utilize all of your senses including your sixth sense, psychic sense, in other words, your imagination. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) practioners have been using basic modeling, which utilizes the brains organizational systems, with clients for decades to assist them in tapping into the potential of the minds creative abilities to produce results beyond their perceived limits. Olympic trainers use visualization technologies to stretch the physical potential of Olympic athletes. Now Quantum NLP practitioners are combining traditional NLP methods with the power of the imagination to produce immediate results for their clients.

As a Quantum NLP practioner, I use methods that create a safe and limitless space for clients to manifest anything their mind can imagine. Using the Quantum State, you can create a full sensory experience in a safe and limitless environment that signals to the mind that whatever is experienced in this space has actually happened in the concrete world, as the mind cannot differentiate input that is imagined or concrete, effectively changing what the mind believes to be true. By utilizing this technology affirmations are founded on congruent beliefs and increase the rate at which they manifest into the concrete world because affirmations are written as expressions of an experience instead of what is wished or wanted to be experienced.

I invite you to take a moment to create a Quantum State for creating affirmations of your creations. Begin by getting into a comfortable position and closing your eyes. Once your eyes are closed, imagine a shape on the ground in front of you. Next, imagine the shape in 3-D. You will create a safe and limitless space for creation inside of this three dimensional shape. Please step inside of the shape and begin to create your quantum space by allowing your imagination to fill it will color, textures, scents, flavors and sounds, that feel comfortable and creative to you. As you notice this space, notice how you feel in your body. Notice the expansiveness and limitlessness of the space. Feel the texture of the inside and outside of the space. Notice the sound that the space makes. Notice how the scent of the space makes you feel. When you are complete with creating your space, you can open the space anytime you choose to create something new in your world.

Once your Quantum Space has been created you are ready to create. Step inside of the space and begin to imagine a circumstance that you would like to manifest into your concrete world. Experience the circumstance fully, feeling it in your body. Notice as you look around if there are any colors that stand out. Notice the world around you. How are the people in this circumstance interacting with each other? What are they wearing, saying or noticing? Notice what you hear in the environment, from others, and in your own mind. Notice all of the scents, tastes and textures of the world where this circumstance are taking place. You notice a mirror and step towards it. Notice your body. What are you wearing? What color is your hair and how is it styled? Notice your shape and size. Notice your posture. Notice your skin, your eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Notice what you are saying about yourself as you look into the mirror. Continue to notice everything about this experience until you feel that you have experienced it fully then travel with this experience into the future and notice how this experienced has changed your life and the life of others including the whole world. Notice how the world has benefited from your having had this experience. Notice the appreciation others have for you because you chose to have this experience. Notice how the world looks through your eyes and the eyes of those you love because you chose to have this experience. As you come to then end of your life, take one last look back through time and notice the generations that have been positively effective because you chose to have this experience. Notice how you are filled with gratitude for the lessons you have learned, the knowledge you have gained and the contribution you have made to the world because of this experience. Allow your creator to acknowledge your accomplishment and thank you for your choices. Now move into the now and gently open your eyes. Notice how you are feeling in your body and your mind. Immediately record your experience in a journal or notebook. Be as descriptive and complete as possible. When you have described as fully as possible your experience, create a statement, or affirmation, to remind you of the experience. Begin your statement with “I AM”, be specific, and speak in the now.

The Laws of Attraction are so powerful that when you hold your attention on a thought for as little as seventeen seconds, another thought is likely to join it, and then another, creating a powerful point of attraction for your desire to be drawn into your circle. For centuries Mandalas, dream catchers, or medicine wheels, have been used for meditation to clear and focus the mind. Creating a meditation around a mandala for your affirmation, releases resistance and increases the power of your intention. To deepen your experience I invite you to use images, colors, key words and phrases that you noticed while in your experience to create your mandala.

LIving BiG

In all of life, we experience the belief of opposition. We cannot experience beauty without the belief of ugliness. We cannot experience joy without the belief of despair, and so it goes, light and dark, male and female, tall and short. As we learn to accept this opposition, and that life delivers contrast from moment to moment for our experience and growth we open a oneness with all life that comes as we flow through change. We begin to see the world from the creator’s perspective, understanding the truth of our identity, living with grace and ease without forming opinions or creating judgments.

When I chose the name of my coaching practice to be My Big Skinny Lyfe I was working through a very difficult event in my life where I learning that I wanted to live big so that I could give big. However, to live big it was important to eliminate the thoughts and feelings about the skinny-nesses in my life. I learned that a flexible, open and loving attitude for others and myself helped me to manage my life with grace and wisdom despite my living through the results of residual choices about myself and my life. We all have skinny-nesses that keep us living small in the world, such as, unworthy-ness, unlovable-ness, cynical-ness, anxious-ness, dark-ness, old-ness, negative-ness, not enough-ness, small-ness, and other Skinny-ness which separate us from our true identity and allows us to live big.

Plotinus says, "Let the body think of the Spirit as streaming, pouring, rushing and shining into it from All sides" We all have an internal recording that plays throughout the day, some are better than others are, louder or more constant yet it does exist for each of us. Checking in with this internal recording gives us clues to the contrast we see. The contrast of skinny-nesses to our desires to live big guides us to identify what we want in our world. Often we verbalize the skinny-nesses for reasons such as, a rationalization for our “yeah-butts,” or a plea for others to validate our big-ness as we feel ourselves unworthy of living big. As we verbalize these skinny-nesses, we create more of them. Belief that we are worthy of receiving goodness makes the mind and body healthy and whole. Accepting the best of ourselves assists us in creating clearly defined boundaries that guard us from attacks that may diminish us. Acknowledging our worth reminds us of who we are, what choices are for our highest good and it essential in creating balanced life strategies that, in turn, will move us to joy.

In some circumstances, it may be difficult to see that goodness is happening all around us and we are stuck in our Skinny-nesses. Nothing gets us moving toward joy, and living BiG, faster than gratitude and service. Gratitude allows us to gain the creators perspective while service focuses us outward. There are emotions that are part of gratitude such as, love, happiness, optimism, and joy. Gratitude in action is a great power. Activating the energy of gratitude in yourself and those around you changes your environment, relationships and perception of the world.

BiG LYFE Tip: My mom always says, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”  Practice noticing the opportunities to play a negative recording and simply choose to be with what is.
George Bernard Shaw expressed, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” I invite you to take a moment now to change your mind and to bring gratitude into your current circumstances. Remember a time when you felt filled with gratitude and feel it fully in your body now. In your mind ’s eye, visualize a large movie screen in front of you. You see your life playing on the screen. Notice all of the players and their environment. Notice what they are feeling as you are stuck in your skinny-nesses. Notice your interactions with each player. Notice all what you are hearing them say and other sounds around you. Notice the color hues of the movie as it plays. Is there one that stands out the most to you? Notice how the environment smells, any textures that you see and feel. Notice the temperature you feel on your skin. As this movie comes to completion you notice a second movie screen next to the first playing a movie of your life filled with gratitude. Notice the feelings of gratitude in your body as you watch the players interact with each other. Notice the environment with all of its sights and sounds. Notice the colors and textures you are seeing. Notice how the environment smells and even the temperature on your skin. Now you begin to notice all of the differences between the first movie and the second. As you notice the changes you feel compelled to share the feelings of gratitude that fill your body now with all of the players on the screen. And as you do so, you notice a single color, sound or feeling on the skin that is shared with the players and it fills them. Now slowly merge the two movies screens together and notice the congruence as the players share the resource of gratitude. Notice how your body feels as you wake up tomorrow morning, throw off the covers, and you are filled with these feelings of gratitude. Notice your interactions with others as you move throughout the day, the week, the month, the year. Take a look back on your life and notice the generations that have followed you and how they too are filled with gratitude. Notice how their lives are different because you chose into gratitude. Notice how they are sharing their gratitude for you with you as they move through their lives. And come back to today, bringing with you all of the feelings and knowledge you have just gained and notice what you are feeling. As you feel complete, gently open your eyes and notice how you feel in your body, and your mind.

H2O (Heart to Others) Project: To deepen your experience, create a Gratitude board out of poster board. Put it in a place where you will see it often each day. Each day, add an entry that reflects what you are grateful for and invite others to add their gratitude to the board. Notice the change that happens to your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self as well as your relationships as you fill your world with gratitude.

I Am.

The next natural step after evaluating how you feel about an event is to create something from it. We are continually creating from moment to moment to moment. My experience in coaching with hundreds of clients is that there is a natural and simple order to making sense of the events of our life and that when we know what that order is it empowers us, we become effective, efficient creators of our own lives, and we find joy and live passionately. The innate creator inside of us takes chaos, evaluates it, intends a new creation and then creates something new. When we create unconsciously, we create stories, judgments and beliefs about ourselves that can cause us to feel unresolved and can result in a recreation of the event repeatedly until we reach resolution. When we create consciously, we are open and aware that experiences create opportunities for us to find and fulfill our purpose and empower us to create our lives with joy and passion.

Einstein says, “In order to solve a problem you have to go one level above the thinking that created the problem.” Evaluated properly, how an event affected us reveals clues to our true self. When we connect to our true self, our choices change organically to match our vibration, and we begin to attract circumstances to live from our higher selves. I like to use the metaphor of a car accident because there are so many that can relate the feelings or can imagine how it must feel to have been the giver or receiver of a car crash. Let us imagine for a moment you have recently been in a moderate car accident. What are some of the things you feel at the time of the accident? What are some of the things you hear on your internal recording? What do you begin to say about yourself? Most who have shared this metaphor with me express that they feel badly about the accident, mainly for the other person. When considering the messages heard on the internal recording the most given answer is, “I am a bad driver.” At this moment a belief is being formed from which choices are made and creation begins. This is the point to stop, look and listen to the clues these feeling give you about your true identity that can alter your belief and the resulting creation. What is your positive intent for feeling badly for yourself and others? What does concern for the wellbeing of yourself and others tell you about your true self? Compassion, love, and kindness are some of the divine characteristics that come to mind. Here is an opportunity for you to choose to believe that you are a “bad driver” and go out creating that you are a bad driver repeatedly as the universe supports your beliefs by matching the “bad driver” vibration. On the other hand, you could choose to believe that you are compassionate, loving, and kind and create that repeatedly as the universe delivers up events that match the vibration of compassion, love, and kindness. Because your level of thinking has increased, your thought, emotion, and physical vibrations have also increased, and you receive opportunities to live from your higher self.

There is a positive intent for all that happens in our world. I feel that by becoming the observer to our lives we become more objective and balance is easy and effortless to have. Slowing our processing down allow us to consciously make new choices that will override old ones that are not working. Our physical, mental and emotional self are tuned into vibrations based on our beliefs about yourself, others and the world. We are receiving matching circumstances and events like a radio waves are tuned in from a car stereo.

I invite you to take a moment as the observer of your creation (world) to stop, look and listen to the feedback you are receiving, consider your desires and ask yourself what is working and what is not working? (You might want to grab a paper and pen this is good stuff). Stop, look and listen for underutilized resources that you already have available to you in the way of talents, skills, divine characteristics. Stop, look, and listen to your internal belief system. What beliefs or thinking habits are attracting events and circumstances to you that you do not like? What is on your internal recording that is incongruent with your desires? What do you feel your mission or purpose is and what is working or not working for you to accomplish this mission or purpose? How do the changes in your world affect others? How would you like it to affect others?

Just like learning to drive a stick this gets easier as you create new neural pathways by practicing this new thought process. Just imagine the results of you making a simple change to the way you respond to your world. Imagine as you wake up tomorrow morning and the alarm goes off how good it will feel to know that you are in charge of your life that no matter what happens you get to say how you allow it to change your world. Imagine as you work through your week how much different your relationships are at work, at home and at play as you choose your results through your feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Imagine how much balance, ease and effortlessness you will notice as you move through each day. Just imagine.

Joy Rising

If man was created to have joy then where is it and how can I get some? When life is life-ing joy often gets lost between the cracks of the everyday. When joy and passion are not present in our everyday lives, feelings like doubt, despair, frustration, anger and disappointment can creep in and steal happiness right out from underneath us. Then, before we know it, we are asking ourselves why we are here, wondering what the purpose of this whole thing we call “life” is, and our identity becomes confused with daily routines, work, children, friends and possessions which leave us wanting for more.

Esther Hicks says, “The most important thing is that you feel good.” When we “feel good”, we are sending out a vibrational beacon to all things that match the frequency of our vibration, much like a radio signal being picked up by a car stereo. When the stereo is tuned just right, we are delighted by the sound of beautiful music through the speakers. When we are out of alignment with the signal that matches our favorite radio station, we get static or overlapping waves that are confused and garbled.

Untangling our identity, or coming into alignment with the frequency of our favorite radio station, object, feeling, circumstance or situation is possible by retraining the way we think or process external input. Our minds are continually taking in input that we are categorizing and connecting to events, feelings, situation, and circumstances, which is how we make decisions about what to do; we call this judgment, frame of reference, experience, or conditioning. Our bodies are complex and beautiful energy systems tuned into different vibrational frequencies. Anyone who has ever experienced tension in a room so thick you could cut it with a knife has experienced the frequency of “tension” through the emotional energy system. What we do with that information happens quickly based upon “experience.” We connect the information about the tension with the images, words, actions, smells, sounds, textures, and temperatures of the event we walked into, store it in the brain and resource it as a whole or in parts when making judgments and choices in similar circumstances.

At times, we feel things that we do not like and wish we could change but feel helpless or held hostage by our emotions. Knowing how your body is receiving, storing and recalling information is the key to change. Our minds are pliable, teachable and trainable, seemingly automatic responses to input can be retrained to give us new results simply and with a little practice. I remember when my granddad taught me how to drive a stick shift. He took me out to a seldom driven dirt road in his little white truck. His instructions to me were simple, to go I needed to push on the brake, push in the clutch, put the car into first gear then slowly let out the clutch while gradually accelerating. To stop the instructions were easier. I was to take my foot off the accelerator, push in the clutch, and pull the truck out of gear then push on the brake gradually until I came to a stop. He had me begin the stopping process well before the stop sign and in my mind’s eye; the image I see is one of a stop sign about the distance of a semi-truck and trailer away from my location in the truck. Now that I am practice in the skill of manual driving this process is smooth, effortless, and automatic. I have a similar experience with my route home. I moved recently and one afternoon after completing some errands, I began the trek home. My new place is not far from my old one and the shops I frequent are the same. I was busy checking phone messages and returning calls when I came to a stop right in front of my old place. I got a good laugh as you might imagine. I had taken this route from the shops so many times in the past that it was deeply conditioned in my mind. I am almost embarrassed to tell you that this was not the last time this happened. I recognize that due to the distractions I was allowing as I was driving that I set myself on auto-pilot to get home. I needed to be more aware or conscious about my choices to get myself to my new place and retrain my brain to get there on auto-pilot. Our emotional navigation system can also be trained to get us to our desired destination as we are willing to recondition its auto-pilot.

Here are some simple manual driving instructions for you to practice. First, consider what you would like to be feeling most of the time. Next, connect with how you are currently feeling. Notice everything about it, Use all of your senses to identify it and locate it in your body. Remember a time when you felt the way you would like to feel. Notice everything about it and fill your body and mind with this feeling. What color is it? Now imagine getting out of bed tomorrow morning and feeling everything about this new feeling and notice how there is a tint of color to your world. As you move through the next weeks, months, and years you notice that the world seems more joyful, vibrant and effortless. Gently open your eyes and notice what you feel in your body. Anytime you wish to recall this feeling simply imagine being drench with the beautiful color you chose to represent this feeling and it will come back to you as a flood.

Everything Is Perfect

As I consider the events that make up a day some seem smoothe and others not so much. It seems that the ones that don't go as expected are the ones that stand out. I believe we are self- correcting beings continually seeking to create balance in our lives.

So, when things don't work out we worry and work to put it into balance. It is important to remember to take a breath, a step back and look at it all from the depths of space and time where the creator of all sits and waits and watches and creates. Taking this perspective allows us to see the creator inside of us is the one who seeks to create change. The recognition that there is something in chaos that calls to us to organize it, intend its purpose then create beauty is a characteristic of our divinity.

My challenge to you is to breathe deeply, and contemplate what it is you are seeing in situations that seem out of order, then, as the creator you are, let go of attempts to go back to do it over and just be who your are. Be a creator. Take the chaos, organize and intend its purpose then create something beautiful. This is the lesson for all of life. We are creators in training given endless ways to practice our creative powers.

Breath Awareness

Here is a little exerpt from week one of the BiG LYFE Design workshop. In my experience one of the simplest ways to bring more peace into life it to breath. Breathing deeply relaxes the body, clears the mind, and slows the pace of a hectic life. Enjoy the process, feel free to print this off and use it at your convenience, and remember... just breathe.

Breath Awareness

Oxygen plays a vital role in a properly functioning system, it turns fat into carbon dioxide that we release as we exhale and water that supports the hydration of organs and tissues. Our stressful lives keep us in a continuous fight or flight mode promoting quick chest respiration that comes in handy for emergencies. Deep breathing reduces stress on the body telling the brain to return all systems to normal. Breath is also symbolic of accepting, allowing, and gratitude for the gift of life. To retrain yourself to breathe deeply take a moment to discover how you are using breath then practice the continuous breathing exercise that follows.

Do you hold your breath for any length of time? If so, how long?

Do you hold your breath in certain situations? If so, when? Describe the situations and the feelings associated with those feelings.

Do you fully inhale when you are accepting a breath? If not, why?

Do you fully exhale when you let go of a breath? If not, why?

What do you expect from the breath?

What do you receive with each breath?

What do you release with each breath?

When do you expect to accept breath fully?

When do you expect to let go of breath fully?

Continuous Breathing (1-2 minutes)
Imagine in your mind, a vast ocean. See the ocean ebbing and flowing in a soothing rocking motion. Listen to the sound the water makes as it moves onto the beach and then retreats to itself again. Feel the rhythm of the water as it moves, rocking you back and forth, back and forth. Now match your breathing to this rhythm, breathing in and out through your mouth, fully expanding and contracting the diaphragm. Place the index and middle fingers of one hand at the base of the sternum and press in one half inch. Feel the diaphragm as it presses against the fingers, pushing out on them. Continue practicing this breath for a few minutes and use this breath throughout each of the meditations in this section.

Here’s the Skinny…

What was your experience with breathing deep into your belly? What did you feel? Were you able to allow your belly to relax fully? What did you notice in your body as you practice this breath? How did you feel after you were finished with the exercise?
